Around 2000 years ago, what is now Utrecht started out as the Roman castrum (camp) of Trajectum.

For centuries thereafter Utrecht grew into a spiritual as well as financial center, and the strategic position of the city also meant a strong military presence over the years, which shows in the cities layout and the fortifications around Utrecht.

The city was spared much of the destruction inflicted to cities in northern Europe during World War II, which leaves Utrecht with a lot of the old original buildings intact. and the old city center is simply astonishing.
