The first record of a settlement at modern days Wroclaw, dates back to the 9th century, when the Slavic Slezan tribe built a stronghold on the island which is today know as Ostrow Tumski.

Wroclaw’s location has made it a strategic key point for empires and kingdoms as well as for religious fractions, priests and clergies for centuries, so the city has seen its part of power struggles and war.

The 1200+ years of history, and the different influences, which followed the shifts of power, has set it’s marks on Wroclaw, its architecture, its culture and the people living there, making it an amazing place to visit.

Wroclaw was more or less leveled to the ground during World War 2. It was estimated that the city was more than 70% destroyed before the war was finally ended. On top of this, almost the entire population of the city was either forced to relocate or had fled the battles, meaning that after the war, most of the population settling in Wroclaw was refugees from Eastern Europe.

However, the people of Wroclaw did a great job reconstructing the old parts of the city, and restored the beauty of the old city center, and after the fall of the iron curtain, the city center is now flourishing with shops, cafe’s restaurants and street artists making it the perfect place for a stroll down the lane of European history.
