Maastricht, the birthplace of the European Union, dates back to the Roman Empire, where Maastricht was a key Roman castrum at the bridge where the main road from Cologne to Gaul crossed the River Maas.

The city has played an important rule in ancient history where both the Roman Empire, France and Spain has ruled over the region, and the city was the key point in connecting northwestern Europe with the south.

Maastricht was spared from much of the destruction which other cities experienced during World War II, but unfortunately the city wasn’t entirely spared.

After the end of World War 2, Maastricht is most famous for the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, which is the foundation of the European Union.
