The history of Amsterdam dates back to the 13th century when the “Dam” was built in the river Amstel. For centuries Amsterdam has been the center of commerce, trading, import and export, and the city has been the wealthiest for long periods of the last 700 years.

After the conquest of Antwerp by the Spanish in 1685, Amsterdam became the biggest and one of the richest cities of the world. During that time, it also became a leading center for finance and diamonds. A position that would be held until around 1700 – Not many is aware is this but “credit” as we know it today was actually evented by the Dutch, making their country proposed way beyond their neighbors.

However, Amsterdam is also know for it’s tolerance between people, religions, ways of life and is considered very open minded. This is not a new thing, it has been so for centuries, and the result is that Amsterdam since the Middle Ages has been a sanctuary for free thinkers, politically and religiously persecuted people and artists, making the city wealthy in both finances as well as religious and cultural institutions.
