The first documented reference to Munich as “forum apud Munichen” (“near the monks”) dates from 1158, which suggests that the history of the city goes back more than 800 years (and probably longer).

Munich has over the years had influence from both north and south of Europe and this has left traces in cities history, culture and architecture, making one of the most visit cities in Europe.

Much of Munich was destroyed during allied bombing raids in WWII, but many of the historical buildings and areas has been restored, and are great to explore on foot.
