The Alhambra has a long  history, going back to before 9th century. Different rulers has used the Castle as both a fortress and as the seat of their empire or Kingdom.

The first historical document describing the Alhambra, dates from the 9th century, when Sawwar ben Hamdun, seeked refuse in the fortress build at the hill top. Later on, in the Muslim rule of Spain, the sultans occupied the castle and used it as the center of their government, until the Catholic Monarchs toke over the ruling in Spain in the 15th century.

The switch between religions and architectural style makes the site unique, and a “must visit place” when visiting Granada.
